The Mysterious History of Candy Necklaces

Remember candy necklaces?

There's nothing better than candy you can wear!

When we were kids, we felt like the coolest kids in school with our wearable candy...because they doubled as a fun accessory and an emergency snack.

There was something magical about candy necklaces. They weren’t just a treat; they were a symbol of childhood freedom!. But where did they come from? Who decided candy should be wearable? It turns out, no one really knows.

Who Invented Them? No One Knows!

Unlike some famous candies with well-known origins, the history of candy necklaces is surprisingly...unknown.

They seem to have appeared sometime in the 1950s, but there’s no definitive record of a single inventor. Some sources suggest they were created in Europe before making their way to the United States, while others believe they were made in the U.S.

What we do know...is that they quickly became a novelty hit.!

The combination of playful jewelry and sugary treats was irresistible to kids (and nostalgic adults). The candy itself—small, pastel-colored, and chalky—resembles classic pressed-sugar confections like Smarties or Necco Wafers.

So, we don't know who invented them; but we sure are glad they did!

Candy Necklaces Today

Decades later, candy necklaces are still going strong. They might not be as common as they were in the ‘80s and ‘90s, but they continue to pop up at retro candy shops!

They're currently produced by the Smarties Candy Co. And we're so glad they're still around!

How about you?
