Is There Still a Jelly Bean Shortage in 2024?

For candy enthusiasts and Easter lovers, the mention of a jelly bean shortage might be cause for concern. After all, these colorful confections have been a staple in candy stores and Easter baskets for generations! But as we approach Easter 2024, the question remains: Is there still a jelly bean shortage?

First, let's take a look at the history of these Easter treats...and remember why we love them so much!

The History of Jelly Beans

Jelly beans have a history dating back to the 19th century. Originally, they were associated with various medicinal uses. It was not until the early 20th century that jelly beans became synonymous with Easter, thanks to their egg-like appearance and sugary appeal.

Over the years, jelly beans evolved from a simple treat to a cultural icon, with various flavors, colors, and brands showing up everywhere! Companies like Jelly Belly, Brach's, and more have introduced so many options into our Easter celebrations. (Did you know they have pickle-flavored jelly beans??)

Despite their enduring popularity, the jelly bean industry has faced challenges, including supply chain disruptions – leading to shortages that have left us without our favorite Easter treat.

Fun Facts About Jelly Beans

  1. Bean Boozled Challenge: Jelly Belly, one of the most well-known jelly bean brands, introduced the "Bean Boozled" line, featuring pairs of jelly beans that look identical but have vastly different flavors—one delicious and the other, well...not so much. This challenge became a viral sensation, attracting millions of participants worldwide.

  2. Ronald Reagan's Favorite Snack: Former US President Ronald Reagan was a known fan of jelly beans. He often kept a jar of them on his desk in the Oval Office, sparking a surge in jelly bean popularity during his tenure.

  3. World's Largest Jelly Bean: The largest jelly bean ever made weighed a whopping 6,050 pounds (2,744 kg). It was created by the Jelly Belly Candy Company in celebration of their 30th anniversary.

  4. Jelly Bean Art: Some artists have taken creativity to new levels by using jelly beans as a medium for their artwork. From intricate mosaics to stunning portraits, these edible masterpieces showcase the versatility of this beloved candy.

Is There Still a Jelly Bean Shortage?

Yes! Unfortunately, certain brands of jelly beans may be harder to find this year due to a shortage that began last Spring, when there was a shortage of starch in the U.S.

But here's the good news...it's really not a big deal! The situation has improved since last year, and you shouldn't have trouble finding jelly beans to fill your Easter eggs with.

That's a relief!
