How Cake Pops Are Made
Cake pops––they’ve been around for a while now.
But when they first emerged back in the early 2010s, it seemed like they came out of nowhere! The trend started after a little-known baker posted the idea on her blog. And now, over ten years later, they’re a staple of sweet shops everywhere. Isn’t it funny how that happens?
So, by now, you’re probably pretty familiar with these strange (and undoubtedly tasty) treats.
But do you know how they’re made?
It’s surprisingly easy––and fun! AND it’s a great way to use leftover cake!

Here are the ingredients:
🍰 Unfrosted cake (store-bought or homemade)
🍰 Frosting (any kind––it doesn't matter!)
🍰 Candy melts
🍰 Lollipop sticks (you can get these at most craft stores. Who knew?)
Here's how to make them:
1. In a large bowl, crumble your cake.
2. Combine the crumbled cake and the frosting, adding the frosting a little at a time. Keep adding frosting until the mixture resembles wet sand.
3. Using a cookie scoop (or your hands), form your cake mixture into balls. Arrange them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
4. Freeze your cake balls. This step is important! They should stay in the freezer for at least an hour, but the longer you freeze them the better.
5. Microwave your candy melts (just follow the instructions on the package).
6. Dip each of your lollipop sticks into the melted chocolate, then insert them into the cake balls. Allow the chocolate to harden.
7. Once the sticks are secure enough to pick up, begin dipping each pop into the melted chocolate. This is the fun part!
8. Place the pops back on the parchment paper and allow the chocolate coating to dry.
And that's it!
You can decorate the cake pops too–– just make sure you add any decorations before the chocolate coating dries.
So, while cake pops may sound complicated, they're really just cake, frosting, and chocolate. And how can you go wrong with that!?
