5 Things You Didn't Know About Laffy Taffy

Everyone knows Laffy Taffy! 

The bite-sized, pastel-colored pieces of taffy are an iconic part of the candy world – and our childhoods! 

But you probably don't know how this candy got its start...and that it didn't even start out as taffy! 

Here are five things you probably didn't know about Laffy Taffy. 

1. It Started Out as Caramel, Not Taffy

The Laffy Taffy we know today debuted in the '70s. But its predecessor dates back much farther – all the way to late 1800s! The candy was called Beich's Caramels, and it was much closer to a caramel than it was to a taffy. It eventually became Beich's Laffy Taffy, and the rest is history. 

2. It's Made in Some Interesting Flavors 

The most common flavors of Laffy Taffy are probably Banana, Strawberry, Green Apple, Cherry and Grape. But did you know there have been some more interesting flavors introduced over the years?

Some of the flavors we've seen include Orange Sorbet, Strawberry Banana, Pineapple, Guava, Lemon Raspberry, Coconut, and Fruit Punch. They even introduced non-fruit flavors, like Pumpkin Donut, Chocolate Moose, and Hot Cocoa.

Not all of these are still available – but it's still pretty cool! 

3. It's All About the Jokes

It's pretty obvious where the "Laffy" in Laffy Taffy comes from. There's a joke on every wrapper – and that's one of the best parts of this candy! 

Today, the brand celebrates all things joke-related, such as collecting fan-submitted jokes for National Laugh Day and holding events at comedy clubs.

4. Stretchy, Tangy and Mini 

Did you know Laffy Taffy came in more than just the standard variety? 

You can find long, tube-shaped Laffy Taffy (introduced in 2007) as well as bags of mini laffy taffy. They also make "Stretchy and Tangy" Laffy Taffy," which is a pretty cool innovation!

5. The Original Packaging Was Very Different

Today, Laffy Taffy is synonymous with its bright-colored packaging. But when it was first introduced, it was really all about the comedy! Check out this photo of an original Laffy Taffy wrapper.
